I never got around to reading the comic so I jumped at the chance to grab the audiobook for this same collection of the first 3 volumes。 I must disclose that， unlike some of the other reviewers I’ve seen here who picked the book up as a fan of Gaiman’s novels， I came into this audiobook expecting to get a comic book reformatted for audio。 While that’s not something I’ve ever seen before， I was not disappointed in the slightest。 Some have complained that the “book” jumped from plot to plot withou I never got around to reading the comic so I jumped at the chance to grab the audiobook for this same collection of the first 3 volumes。 I must disclose that， unlike some of the other reviewers I’ve seen here who picked the book up as a fan of Gaiman’s novels， I came into this audiobook expecting to get a comic book reformatted for audio。 While that’s not something I’ve ever seen before， I was not disappointed in the slightest。 Some have complained that the “book” jumped from plot to plot without a clear long-term goal and that is totally true but once again， it’s the path of an ongoing comic series; we get a 6-issue “arc” followed by a couple standalone stories and then another arc， etc。 Knowing what I was getting into， I found the plot and pacing totally satisfying。The story itself lives up to all Gaiman’s other work albeit with a notably darker tone。 Once again he weaves his original setting and characters （the Endless） into various existing mythologies and folklore and any fan of the DC Universe will adore the appearances of a few interestingly chosen characters from the comics。 Like other Gaiman books， Sandman sufficiently infuses thought-provoking questions and universal lessons into a fresh and fantastic world。 There’s great action and adventure to be had。On the other side of the coin， the characters suffer from the medium translation。 We don’t get enough time to get to know any characters very intimately other than Rose and Dream and even the two stars fall flat compared to characters from books made to be novels。 There is also the issue of the story’s disturbing nature。 Gore and brutality have never been my “cup of tea” but I can appreciate them when they’re necessary to the story and as an avid Gaiman reader， I didn’t expect unnecessary bloodshed。 While this holds up for most of the story， there were certain parts that shocked me in their brutality and truly left me wanting to vomit （looking at you， Doctor Destiny episode）。 That said， I really enjoyed the Sandman and the narrative cast and effects were a brilliant and refreshing change， in my opinion。 I wouldn’t rate it close to my favorite Gaiman books but I can definitely understand how it consistently ranks so highly in people’s list of favorite fiction works。 I’d recommend it for anyone who loves Gaiman and isn’t afraid of extreme adult themes and any fan of the DC Universe。 In my experience， it is among the best DC comic series ever written， from a narrative perspective。（8/10） 。。。more

Sandman， la obra cumbre， más famosa y el gran trabajo de su vida del dios entre mortales Neil Gaiman， y una de las mayores puntas de lanza del sello。Podemos dividir en dos tipos a las series de Vertigo: por un lado， tenemos a las series 100% independientes， que ocurren en su propio mundo creado para la ocasión sin pertenecer a ningún universo ni continuidad establecida， y por otro， las series que sí que pertenecen al Universo DC， dentro de la continuidad creada tras las Crisis， usando a personajes muy desconocidos y olvidados， creando nuevas versiones de ellos para la ocasión y contando historias independientes de las cabeceras mainstream superheroicas。 Este segundo es el caso de Sandman， con el que Gaiman rescató el nombre de un antiguo héroe deceita para crear algo totalmente nuevo y que nada tiene que ver con el original， siendo una reinvención tan grande que prácticamente creó un nuevo personaje desde cero。Esta es la historia de Morfeo， aunque ese es solo uno de sus muchos nombres， el Sueño y uno de los Eternos， seres que son la encarnación de conceptos vitales para la propia existencia y realidad。 Sin embargo， a principios del siglo XX una sociedad espiritista logró encarcelarle por error （pues ellos querían a Muerte） y Morfeo pasó 70 años siendo prisionero en el mundo humano。 Una vez liberado， el rey de los sueños toma venganza de sus capturas y tendrá por delante la tarea de arreglar todos los problemas que su ausencia ha provocado tanto en el mundo de los sueños como en el de la vigilia。Esta colección Deluxe está formada por 8 volúmenes con todo el material que Gaiman hizo con la serie， ya sea en la principal， o en otras secundarias y spin-offs que hizo más tarde。 El tomo 0 es la precuela Sandman: Obertura que se hizo en 2013， siendo lo último que Gaiman escribió de este universo y con la que lo cerró definitivamente por su parte， por lo que su lectura y reseña será la última de todas， además que si se lee el primero spoilearía la serie principal。Así que en este tomo 1 tenemos el comienzo de la serie original con sus dos primeros arcos argumentales （cada tomazo Deluxe contiene dos arcos）: 'Preludios y Nocturnos' y 'La Casa de Muñecas'。 En el primero vemos cómo Morfeo intenta recuperar los tres objetos de poder que creó en tiempos inmemoriales con su propio ser y que le fueron robados en su encierro， y en el segundo asistimos a su búsqueda de varios habitantes del mundo de los sueños que aprovecharon para escapar a la realidad。 También tenemos los maravillosos capítulos autoconclusivos en los que conocemos a Muerte （su hermana mayor）， se nos cuenta la fábula sobre cómo en tiempos pasados se enamoró de una humana， y sus charlas cada 100 años con un hombre inmortal。A través de todas estas historias se nos presenta de la mejor y más imaginativa forma posible tanto al complejo protagonista como todo el entorno que le rodea， en el que también hay hueco para unos cuantos cameos con el universo DC más superheroico mainstream， con un uso fantástico de la retrocontinuidad y explicando de paso quiénes eran los anteriores Sandman y el por qué de su existencia， así como interacciones con otros personajes del sello Vertigo， como Constantine， todo mientras Gaiman crea un concepto imaginativo tras otro tratando de forma estupenda todo lo referente a lo onírico， que se logra plasmar visualmente en el cómic de forma espléndida con el dibujo de Sam Kieth en los primeros números， y de Mike Dringenberg después， que se adecuan a la perfección a lo que busca Gaiman y sin los que este cómic perdería muchísima de su entidad。 Mención aparte merecen las portadas de Dave McKean， simplemente perfectas para esta serie y legendarias。En definitiva， un comienzo buenísimo con un potencial gigantesco y que deja sentir los tintes de obra maestra que se apuntan entre sus páginas。 Pronto seguiré con ella， pero de momento y hasta entonces， solo nos queda soñar。 。。。more

The Sandman series was what opened my eyes to Neil Gaiman， at the age of 14-15。 I absolutely love this series， and I have actually gotten ¨D is for lots of things¨ tattooed on my body。 A simple way of showing my love for it。 The Absolute Sandman volumes are fantastic and I love that I have several of the comics in one thick beautiful book。
